What really happened to Lord Lucan?

It's one of the most baffling unsolved crime stories in a generation. What happened to Lord Lucan after the murder of his children's nanny over forty years ago? Sandra Rivett was at the family home in London when she was killed with a lead pipe. It was alleged he had mistaken her for his estranged wife. Lady Lucan discovered the scene at the Belgravia mansion and was also then attacked. She escaped and went into a nearby pub where she told people her husband was a killer.

After the murder Richard John Bingham, the 7th Earl of Lucan was last seen at a friends house in Uckfield in Sussex. Three days later a car he had been using was found parked in a street in Newhaven. Soon the trail went cold. Over the years there have been various conspiracy theories, had he gone to France on a ferry? committed suicide? or was he at a friends house in Mexico? There have been countless supposed sightings around the world of the gambler who, it is said, was once considered for a starring role as James Bond.
