World's largest tarantula arrives at Hastings aquarium

A giant tarantula, which can reach the size of a dinner plate, has found a new home in Sussex.

The goliath bird eating spider - the world's biggest species of tarantula - is settling in at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Hastings.

The eight-legged, furry creature has a leg span of up to 30cm.

The South American spider doesn't dine lightly, usually feeding on lizards, frogs, rodents and other insects, using its massive 3cm fangs to feast.

It pounces on its prey, using its weight to pin it down, before injecting venom from its fangs and wrapping its victim up in silk.

Although its venom is not lethal to humans, animal experts advise not to get too close.

Not only is its venom something to fear, the huge spider can make a hissing noise by rubbing its hairy legs together, to scare off potential predators.

The aquarium's newest addition is now on display in the 'Jungle Room', an exhibition dedicated to reptiles and creepy-crawlies.
