New footage tells of Hop picking memories

Children at play during the Hop picking season

Rare and previously unseen colour footage of life in the hop farms of Kent 50 years ago is featuring on a new DVD.Hop Picking Memories looks at hop picking from the 1930s up to the 1960s and shows how tens of thousands of people travelled to the hop fields, of Kent, living and sleeping in wooden huts and cooking their meals on open fires. The workers were mainly Londoners who made an annual trip to the Garden of England in trains and on fleets of lorries and they weren't always entirely welcomed by locals.

We interview Kerrie Moroney, the DVD's assistant producer and hear from former hop-picker Flo Roud who was caught on camera as a teenager.
