Tragedy crossing - questions remain

The aftermath of the level crossing crash at Yarnton in Oxfordshire

It has been confirmed that there was a problem last year with the level crossing barriers at Sandy Lane in Yarnton in Oxfordshire where a man died on Wednesday 2nd January 2013. But Network Rail say they believe the barriers were working normally when the car was hit by a freight train.

The passenger in the car was killed, and has been named as Thomas Pizzey, aged 85, from Banbury. The driver, who is 78-years-old was injured and is being treated at the St John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The tragedy is the latest accident involving a level crossing where the barriers go across just half of the road. And tonight their safety is again being questioned. Our Transport Correspondent, Mike Pearse sendt this report.
