Are out fish stocks being wiped out?

Are electric nets threatening our fishing stocks?

Two conflicting claims have emerged about a method of fishing being employed by Dutch fishermen off the Kent coast. The crews are using pulse trawlers and electrified nets to catch fish.

The argument revolves around whether the pulse trawlers and electrified nets are an environmentally-friendly method of catching the fish or something that is a surefire way of wiping out our fishing stocks.

One local fisherman from Kent told Meridian that so many fish were being killed off, it was like fishing in a graveyard, and that entire shoals were being - in his words - "annihilated". John Ryall reports.
