A 42-year-old man was remanded in custody today after appearing in court charged with the murder of a 17-year-old boy.

Adam Skilton, of Wilton Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, is accused of killing student Jacob Woudstra outside the Shah pub in Hastings on April 5 and also of perverting the course of justice.

Hastings Magistrates' Court adjourned the case to Lewes Crown Court on a date to be fixed, Sussex Police said.

Wesley Long, 34, of High Street, Hastings, who has been charged with perverting the course of justice, also appeared.

An application for bail by Long was refused and his case was adjourned to Lewes Crown Court on June 22.

A 31-year-old man from Rye, arrested on suspicion of the murder of Jacob, and a 19-year-old man from Hastings, arrested for violent disorder, have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A post-mortem examination found Jacob died from a single stab wound to the chest.
