Sad end to half marathon
A man has died today after collapsing at the finishing line of the Reading Half Marathon. The sad end came after 20,000 took part.
The runner, who was in his late 30s, has not been named. He crossed the finish line at the Madejski Stadium and collapsed. He was immediately taken to hospital but medical staff were unable to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead this afternoon, race organisers said. They released a statement a short time ago.
"This is deeply upsetting and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this distressing time."
Earlier the Spring sunshine had provided almost perfect conditions for the annual street race with a record number taking part. This report was sent before the death of the runner was known.
