Police station evacuated as suspected mortar shells are handed in

A busy high street was evacuated in a bomb scare today after suspected mortar shells were handed in to a police station.

Loughton Police Station was cleared when a member of the public brought in the suspicious devices at around 11.40am after discovering them in a loft.

The haul was moved to the rear yard of the station in Epping Forest, Essex, and a 100-metre exclusion zone was set up.

They were secured in the rear yard of the police station for assessment by the Ministry of Defence's explosive ordnance disposal team. They have attended and declared the items safe and the cordons were stood down shortly after 1.05pm.
