The actions of the Met 'compounded the suffering and trauma of Mr Morgan's family, a government response to a report into the handling of the case said.

Mr Morgan, a private detective, was found dead in a car park in Sydenham in 1987. The case is one of the Met's longest unsolved murder cases.

The Metropolitan Police were accused of institutional corruption by an independent panel over the 1987 killing, which has remained unsolved.
