Tribute to 70-year-old rape victim's 'courage'

The Metropolitan Police has paid tribute to the 'spirit and courage' of 70-year-old pensioner who was raped and beaten in her Chessington home, and later gave evidence in court. Today Robert Richards was found guilty of attempted murder, rape and attempted rape. He will be sentenced on Monday.

Detective Inspector Nicky Arrowsmith went on to say:

"I would also like to thank the witnesses who helped the victim shortly after the offence and also for giving evidence in court."Thankfully this type of violent offence is rare and I hope that the swift identification, arrest and charge of Richards will give other victims of sexual offences the confidence to come forward in the belief that they will be treated with the utmost sensitivity by specially trained detectives who are committed to supporting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.

Man found guilty of raping a pensioner

A man has been found guilty of raping and trying to murder a 70-year-old pensioner in her Chessington home. Robert Richards, 22, broke into her bedroom early in the morning before raping and beating her. The woman was found with extensive injuries.

He will be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Monday.
