Police emergency call handler recognised for quick-thinking after 'pizza-delivery' 999 call
A police emergency call handler has been praised for her quick thinking after recognizing that a call from a woman requesting a pizza delivery was actually a disguised and urgent plea for help.
The Metropolitan police shared the audio of the call on their X account, with the 999 caller's words voiced by an actor.
By instructing the woman to respond with single words, the handler, who has not been named, was able to gather crucial information and ensure officers were sent to provide help.
"Pizza Delivery," the 999 caller said as she called.
"Pizza Delivery? Ok, do you require pizza delivery or do you require the police? If it's the police, say yes," the dispatcher replied
"Yes," the woman responded.
"Okay, is the person that's scaring you at the property now," the dispatcher questioned.
"Yes," the caller said.
"No problem, police are coming. Okay, have they got any weapons. Answer yes or no?" the dispatcher asked.
"No," the caller responded.
"If he threatened to hurt you, tell me pepperoni. If he threatened to hurt the children, tell me cheese," the dispatcher said.
"Pepperoni," the caller specified.
The call handler then assured her the police would with her shortly.
