Inflation-busting rise for London Tube and train fares as Sadiq Khan scraps travel freeze

Millions of Londoners are to be hit with an inflation-busting increase in the cost of their daily commute after Sadiq Khan was forced to scrap his fares freeze.Tube and train fares in the capital will rise by 4.6% in March after ministers ordered the mayor to increase ticket prices in line with the national rail network.But bus and tram fares will be frozen. The cost of a bus ticket - including the multiple journey 'Hopper' fare - will stay at £1.75.City Hall said buses were the 'most used' form of public transport in the capital with 95% of Londoners living within 400m of a bus stop.Transport for London was told to match the train companies' fares hike in return for a £485m funding package announced in the budget.Sadiq Khan said: "Following the Government’s budget, ministers made clear that to secure national funding for key transport projects in the future, TfL Tube and rail fares would need to increase in line with national rail fares.He added: "Vital national government funding will allow us to progress exciting future projects, such as Superloop 2 and more upgrades to the Tube network, as we continue building a fairer, safer and greener London for everyone.’
