People living close to a Surrey beauty spot described today how flames from a massive wildfire almost reached their luxury homes.

The inferno destroyed more than 500 hectares of heathland at Chobham common close to the ‘stockbroker belt’ village of Sunningdale.

More than 150 people were forced to find temporary accommodation when police evacuated 60 homes.

Firefighters are expected to spend the rest of the week tackling hotspots after spending three days taming the inferno.

Four miles of high pressure hose have been laid to give fire crews an immediate water supply in case the blaze reignites.
