Sadiq Khan: 'Everyone must now stay home', only leave if essential - 'these rules are not optional'

London's mayor echoed the Prime Minister's statement on Monday night after Boris Johnson placed the UK on lockdown to tackle coronavirus.

Sadiq Khan said "everyone must now stay home" apart from:

• Shopping for necessities as infrequently as possible

• Exercising once a day

• Medical need

• Travelling to work only if you work in a critical industry like the NHS

Mr Khan added "these rules are not optional. They are to stop people dying."

On Monday evening Boris Johnson threatened police fines for anyone who ignored the new measures which also include a ban on public gatherings of more than two people.
