Former Labour leadership contender Chuka Umunna fails to return to Parliament

Former Labour leadership contender Chuka Umunna has failed in his bid to return to Parliament as a Liberal Democrat MP.

The ex-Streatham MP lost out to Westminster Council leader Nickie Aiken in the Cities of London & Westminster.

He briefly entered the race to replace Ed Miliband in 2015 before withdrawing. The contest was won by Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Umunna quit Labour in February in protest at the party's refusal to back a second referendum.

He was one of the founding members of the The Independent Group of MPs (TIG) which included fellow Labour defectors Joan Ryan (Enfield North) and Mike Ga[pes (Ilford South).

Mr Umunna later joined the Liberal Democrats where he was appointed Foreign Affairs spokesman.
