Environment minister Zac Goldsmith defeated by Lib Dem rival in Richmond

The Conservatives suffered a second blow in London on election night when Environment minister Zac Goldsmith was defeated by his Liberal Democrat rival.

Sarah Olney overturned a Tory majority of just 45 to win the Richmond Park seat for the second time in three years. Her majority was 7,766.

She first won the seat in a by election in 2016 after Mr Goldsmith resigned in protest at the government's backing for a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

Brexit supporting Mr Goldsmith recaptured the seat in the 2017 general election despite a majority of voters in his constituency backing Remain.

The Conservative loss of Richmond followed the party's defeat in Putney.
