Areas of Kingston in south west London have been evacuated after the discovery of a World War II bomb.

The bomb was found at 9am on a building site on Fassett Road. Specialist police officers examined it, and cordons were put in place around the area. Experts from the Ministry of Defence are now working to make the area safe.

Kingston University's Penrhyn Road and Knights Park campuses were evacuated, along with Surbiton High School, where some Year 10 students were sitting exams.

Police say the cordons could remain in place overnight on Friday.

Residents who cannot get back to their homes have been told to go to the United Refromed Church on Eden Street. Those affected can call the Kingston Council contact line on 020 8547 5800. The line will be available 24/7.
