Southwark Tube station under threat from new skyscraper
The award-winning design of Southwark Tube station is under threat as developers consider demolishing part of the ticket hall to build a 30-storey skyscraper.
The circular ticket hall was designed to be built over but the station’s foundations can only support a structure of 11 storeys. The plans involve building 300 flats that overlook Blackfriars Bridge.
The proposal has been condemned in a letter to the The Times by architects who worked on the £3.5 billion project to extend the Jubilee line.
The letter urges Karen Bradley, the culture secretary, to intervene after the design was rejected for listed status by Historic England.
