Met Police under investigation over the case of the corrupt former Mayor of Tower Hamlets

A Scotland Yard investigation into council corruption in the East End was today referred to a police watchdog after no one was prosecuted.

Controversial Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman was ejected two years ago after an election court uncovered 'corrupt and illegal practices'.

Muslim residents were told it was un-Islamic to vote for other candidates. Bangladeshi groups were bribed with council grants. A rival candidate was smeared as a racist.

Rahman was banned from standing in a re-run of the 2014 election but escaped prosecution.

London's Deputy Mayor for Policing Sophie Linden has asked Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary to examine police files.
