The director of railway safety has responded to questions over the Croydon tram crash saying there are 'still have too many close calls'.

Ian Prosser, Director of Railway Safety and HM Chief Inspector of Railways told MPs at a Transport Select Committee the Croydon tram crash was a "very strong reminder" that officials should not be complacent.

"We still have too many close calls despite being the safest railway in Europe."
