Acton man who tried to travel to Syria with the intention of joining ISIS convicted of terror charges

A man from Acton who attempted to travel to Syria with the intention of joining ISIS has been convicted.

Jabed Hussain, 22, from Acton, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to two charges of preparation of terrorist acts contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006, namely:

  • between 21 March 2015 and 28 August 2015 with the intention of committing acts of terrorism engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention

  • between 27 August 2015 and 29 April 2016 with the intention of committing acts of terrorism engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention

In August 2015, Hussain attempted to travel to Syria and was detained by Turkish authorities at the Turkey - Syria border and returned to the UK.

He then changed his name by deed poll to "Ishaq Jabir Hussain" and attempted to apply for a passport in this new name in order to evade the authorities.

He was unsuccessful and was arrested for TACT offences on Thursday, 28 April.

He was charged with two offences and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, May 4.

Sentencing has been set for 16 December at the Old Bailey.
