The oldest timber yard in the country is facing closure even though campaigners have urged the firm running its redevelopment to think again about plans to turn it into two units for independent retailers.

But Grosvenor Britain & Ireland says it is committed to protecting the area's "unique character" as an "independent design and retail district" and has consulted over its plans.

Newson’s Timber Yard, in Belgravia, which is around 175 years old, is expected to close after the developer was given the green light for the plans for residential and commercial development later this year.
