Rail delay compensation changes: what you need to know

Changes to rail delay compensation take effect next month.

The new rules will apply to all transport services, including mainline passenger rail services.

Major changes to rail compensation:

  • Passengers will be able to claim for any delay - currently it has to be more than 30 minutes

  • Compensation will be paid in cash, rather than rail vouchers

  • Commuters will be able to claim for ticket losses caused by missed connections

"We want to strengthen the rights of rail passengers to get compensation for poor service," Rail Minister Paul Maynard said.

Passengers who are unhappy with their compensation - which currently varies between operators - will be able to pursue their claim through the courts if they fail to resolve the issue with the train company.
