Police placed the residential road on lockdown as they carried out a fingertip search of the area.
The container was dumped close to a synagogue in Ravensdale Road, Stamford Hill.
After finding nothing suspicious inside the container, detectives searched under cars parked nearby.
According to the Hackney Gazette, a lorry driver had left it in the road because his load of two containers was too long for him to get round a bend.
The driver reportedly returned, after getting the first container to its intended destination, to find a swarm of police.
The road in north London was reopened at just after 10am, about an hour after police were called to the scene.
