An intruder sparked a security scare after spending seven minutes in the grounds of Buckingham Palace.

The 41-year-old man, who was not armed, is understood to have scaled the walls of the Palace gardens at 8.30 last night.

ITV News understands the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were both at the Palace at the time. They have both been told about the incident.

It took seven minutes after the alarm was raised before the man was arrested by Royal and Diplomatic protection squad officers. He is now being questioned by detectives.

A former royal protection officer has praised the Met Police for their "quick response".
