ITV London/LBC poll: Sadiq Khan maintains lead over Zac Goldsmith in the final days of campaign
Labour candidate Sadiq Khan has maintained his lead over Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith in the final days of the London mayoral campaign, according to a new poll.
Voting intention
The latest poll for ITV London and LBC shows Sadiq Khan leads Zac Goldsmith by 45% to 36% on first preference votes.
After second preferences have been reallocated, it leaves Khan with a 12 point lead: 56% to 44%.
The successful candidate needs more than 50% of the votes to win outright but that has never happened in the history of London mayoral elections.
The result is almost certain to be decided by second preference votes.
The Boris Effect
Today's new poll also suggests the Conservatives may have performed better if Boris Johnson were standing for re-election as Mayor.
41% said they would vote for Boris, compared to 39% for Sadiq Khan.
Candidate characteristics
When voters were asked how they perceive the candidates, Sadiq Khan has opened up a lead on being "trustworthy and passionate". But, the proportion saying he is "extreme and dangerous" has increased since April, and for Zac Goldsmith too.
Election Campaigns
While a similar proportion of Londoners refer to each campaign as "boring", they are more likely to associate Sadiq Khan and Labour’s campaign with being positive (32% vs 23%), and Zac Goldsmith and the Conservatives’ campaign with being dirty (19% vs 8%).
