A troop-carrying military helicopter which landed in a south London suburban park was taking part in a "routine training" exercise, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The RAF Chinook, filmed by ITV News cameraman Craig Doyle, circled low over Ruskin Park, Herne Hill before touching down on an area of open grass close to a football pitch.

Mothers with young children and dog walkers watched the dramatic landing and take-off.

Local residents say visits by Chinooks have become more frequent in recent months.

The Chinook, which can carry 55 soldiers, is the military's main 'heavy-lift' helicopter. One of its primary roles is to fly troops into combat zones.

Ruskin Park is a designated 'Helicopter Landing Site' to allow critically ill patients to be transferred to nearby King's College Hospital by air ambulance.
