Former Orpington MP Lord Avebury dies aged 87

Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Avebury, who was Orpington's MP for eight years, has died aged 87.

Eric Avebury won a Conservative by-election in the Bromley constituency in 1962.

He secured further wins at the next two general elections, but was narrowly defeated in 1970 by Conservative candidate Ivor Stanbrook.

The father of five Inherited the title of Baron Avebury in 1971.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has led the tributes to Lord Avebury.

He had been suffering from leukemia and died at home in London.
