Londoners are Britain's most scrutinised motorists, with 498 active CCTV cameras

New figures obtained by website Confused.com reveal how Londoners are Britain's most scrutinised motorists.

A Freedom of Information request shows there are currently 498 active CCTV cameras being used in London to catch people:

  • Driving in bus lanes

  • Stopping in yellow box junctions

  • Making illegal U-turns

  • Making illegal right-hand turns

With 768 CCTV cameras being used across the UK for this means, drivers in London could be forgiven for thinking all eyes are on them.

Motorists across the capital contribute 65% of all revenue received across the UK by councils using CCTV cameras.

Since 2012, motorists in London have paid more than £119 million in fines. And since 2012, some borough councils in London have seen huge rises in the amount of fines given out.

And it was Ealing Council that tops the list for most revenue raised from CCTV cameras across London in 2015. In 2015, they have issued 57,167 Penalty Charge Notices, bringing in revenue totalling £3,004,278.

  • The London Borough of Hounslow has seen their average fine rise by 124% since 2012, the largest rise across the UK, taking the average fine from £22.80 in 2012 to £51.18 in 2015

  • The London Borough Bexley has seen a rise of 39% - from £36.05 in 2012 to £49.97 in 2015

  • Conversely, the City of Westminster has seen their average fines halve (53%) since 2012 – dropping from £58.87 to £27.48
