Police made more than 300 arrests and seized thousands of nitrous oxide gas canisters (so-called laughing gas) over the weekend at the Notting Hill Carnival.

This year's carnival was attended by around a million people over the course of the weekend, police said, and managed to keep the party atmosphere despite the heavy showers that rained on the parade.

There was a significant police presence at this year's event, with thousands of officers on patrol and helicopter patrolling the skies.

Officers made 188 arrests by late Monday evening, in addition to 126 arrests for the previous day for assault, criminal damage, public order offences, possession of weapons, theft, sexual offences and drugs-related offences.

One police officer was stabbed, whilst another was bitten in two separate incidents.

Three of the 314 arrests made were in connection with a separate stabbing attack against a 19-year-old. The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and is now in a stable condition.

The Met said they seized more than 3,500 nitrous oxide canisters, worth more than £17,000 during the festival, and the parade route and surrounding areas were littered with balloons and discarded gas canisters.

One officer suffered a dislocated nose after he was punched in the face while confiscating 400 canisters in Lonsdale Road.
