The Iranian, embassy, which was stood empty for four years, is to reopen as relations between Iran and the United Kingdom continue to improve.

In a ceremony in Tehran on Sunday, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond reopened the British embassy four years after it was attacked by angry demonstrators, forcing the British government to withdraw its staff and expel Iranian diplomats from the UK.

Since then, relations between London and Tehran improved after the election Hassan Rouhani as president and Iran's strategic position came under the international spotlight as the crisis sparked by Islamic State, also known as Isil, grew in neighbouring Iraq.

In a ceremony at the embassy, where the the Union Flag was raised, Mr Hammond said: "Today's ceremony marks the end of one long journey, and the start of a new, and, I believe, exciting one."

The Iranians are expected to reopen their embassy in London shortly.
