Shopkeepers in Neasden Shopping Centre have all signed an agreement not to sell high strength beers containing more than 6 per cent alcohol.

The move comes following a meeting between store staff, Brent Police and Brent Council Licensing team earlier this week.

Police said the meeting was to discuss the issue of street drinkers and to tackle crime and serious harm caused by selling super-strength alcohol.

PC Michael Sullivan, Brent licensing officer said: "Super-strength lagers, beers and ciders cause significant harm to both consumers and the community. A reduction in their availability is a step in the right direction in reducing alcohol-related harm for everyone."

Councillor Krupesh Hirani, Brent Council's Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing, was also at the meeting.

He said: "It's a really positive step that the businesses within Neasden Shopping Centre have committed not to sell high strength beers. This shows how businesses are taking their customers' health seriously and understand the implications of selling such products."
