Two men have been jailed after a semi-automatic submachine gun was found hidden in a shoe box in a kitchen.

Police raided a house in Commonwealth Way, Greenwich in August.

When they arrived the house was empty but while searching Matthew Moran, 56, turned up at the scene.

Officers found the Mac 10 machine gun and ammunition in a shoe box which was wrapped in numerous bags.

He was arrested at the scene and later released on bail.

The firearm along with the ammunition and box were sent for forensic examination.

Based on this, officers arrested a second man, 23-year-old Charlie Moran.

Analysis revealed that both individuals were forensically linked to "various items" inside the box containing the firearm.

Charlie Moran, 23, of Guild Road, Greenwich was found guilty of possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition on Thursday and was jailed for eight years.

Matthew Moran, 56, of Commonwealth Way, Abbey Wood had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition on 25 February.

On 29 May he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and cultivation of cannabis.
