The full list of candidates in the new battle for control of Tower Hamlets Council will be known today when nominations close in the election for mayor.

The re-run contest is expected to be a showdown between Labour's John Biggs and Rabina Khan from the discredited Tower Hamlets First party.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman was thrown out of office in April after an election court found him guilty of corrupt and illegal practices.

Rahman is banned from standing again and his party, THF, is no longer recognised by the Electoral Commission.

Khan, a member of THF's ruling group on the council, is expected to stand as an independent.

She was named by Rahman as his successor at a packed meeting of supporters in Whitehchapel two weeks ago.
