Man caught trying to dump a body in the Thames

The man was trying to dump a body at Deptford Wharf

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was seen trying to dump a body in the River Thames.

Police were called just before 3am this morning about a man believed to be attempting to throw a body into the river at Deptford Wharf.

The man was later stopped in his car on Evelyn Street, about half a mile back from the water. The body of a man in his 20s, who had suffered head injuries, was found in the boot.

London Ambulance Service attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, who was in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody at a police station in south London.

Police are still investigating, but think the victim was killed at an address in Thornton Heath in Croydon. They searched the property and arrested a woman.

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, but are asking for any witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward.
