London penthouse breaks record for most expensive home ever sold in the UK
A penthouse flat in Mayfair has just broken the record for the most expensive home ever sold in the UK - smashing the previous record, also in Mayfair, of £5000 per square foot.
Property developer British Land said the property broke the previous record by a "substantial margin". The company has also sold another 18 flats in the development at the Clarges Estate in Mayfair for an average of £4,750 per square foot.
British Land did not disclose the price of the individual flats, citing "buyer confidentiality" - but said the price for the 18 totalled £210 million - an average of just over £11.6 million each.
The development will not be complete for another three years, but when it is finished it will contain a combination of 34 flats as well as office space, a swimming pool, a "wellness spa" and even a private cinema.
Clarges Estate is the former home of the prestigious Kennel Club of Great Britain - and agreeing to find a new home for it was one of the conditions when British Land bought the estate for £129.6m in 2012.
