Ken attacks pension changes
The Labour mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone has accused Boris Johnson of not doing enough to protect pensioners. He has claimed the London Mayor spent too much time calling for the end of the 50% income tax rate and not enough fighting the freeze on pensioners' tax allowance. Both measures were announced by the Chancellor George Osborne in the Budget on Wednesday.
Mr Livingstone said: “Boris Johnson’s Tory tax cut for millionaires is being paid for by 400,000 ordinary London pensioners. These pensioners have been completely let down by the Tory Mayor who has campaigned for a tax cut for the super rich while ignoring the needs of older Londoners."
However, Boris Johnson has claimed that the 50% income tax rate was damaging London's businesses and needed to be cut. The Chancellor has also said that pensions will soon be raised.
