Have your say on plans for a new Peterloo massacre memorial

Designs for a memorial to commemorate the bicentenary of the Peterloo massacre next year will be unveiled in Manchester later.

The City Council has commissioned the artwork.

The designs will go on display at the Central Libray for 3 days to allow people to comment.

PETERLOO MASSACRE FACTFILE:

  • THE PETERLOO MASSACRE IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE BATTLE OF PETERLOO
  • IT HAPPENED IN 1819 IN ST PETER'S FIELD (NOW ST PETER'S SQUARE)
  • A CROWD OF 60,000 to 80,000 GATHERED AT A MEETING TO DEMAND THE REFORM OF PARLIAMENT
  • 15 PEOPLE DIED AND AT LEAST 400 WERE INJURED WHEN SOLDIERS CHARGED INTO THE MEETING WITH SWORDS DRAWN
  • THE MASSACRE WAS GIVEN THE NAME PETERLOO IN IRONIC COMPARISON TO THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO WHICH TOOK PLACE FOUR YEARS EARLIER.
