Shake up planned for the region's parliamentary constituencies
Plans to reduce the number of parliamentary constituencies in the region have been announced.
Massive changes to the boundaries, part of a national shake up ahead of the 2020 general election, would mean there would be seven fewer North West MPs - from 75 to 68.
George Osbourne's Tatton constituency is among those expected to be split up.
Just 14 of those 75 constituencies would remain unchanged under the Boundary Commission's plans.
Among the proposals are seats which cross traditional county borders -one covering parts of Lancashire and Merseyside, and a second covering parts of Wirral and Cheshire - the commission has even considered a constituency which crosses the River Mersey.
- The proposals at a glance:
- Cumbria will fall from six to five constituencies.
- Lancashire will be allocated 14 constituencies, a reduction of two.
- Merseyside's number will fall from from 15 to 13 - but that includes a proposed Wirral/Cheshire or Wirral/Liverpool constituency.
- Greater Manchester will lose two constituencies and have 25 in total.
- Cheshire will have 10, a reduction of one, including the proposed Cheshire/Wirral seat.
