John Robert Radcliffe was born in Blackburn in 1893. He was a private in the Lancashire Regiment during the war.

He was mustard gassed during the Battle of the Somme. As he was recovering he did this embroidery, which helped him come to terms with what he had experienced.

– Jean Dunston, John's great-niece
