Police looking for axe-wielding robber in Bowdon

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man wielding an axe stole cigarettes from a shop in Bowdon.

Police say around 2100 on Monday 28th July 2014, a man entered the Co-op store on Vicarage Lane, Bowdon, carrying an axe and wearing a scarf over his face.

He told the one of the shopkeepers to hand over cash and cigarettes, saying: ‘Do as I say and you won’t get hurt.’

He forced her to empty the contents of the cash drawer into a bag before stealing cigarettes.

Officers say he drove off in a Mercedes E Class saloon with a 06 licence plate, on Vicarage Lane towards Langdon Road.

The man is described as white, around 5ft 8in tall, 30-40 years old with a slim to medium build. Police say he was wearing black baseball cap, a white shirt underneath a brown jacket, dark trousers, black shoes and with a scarf across the lower part of his face.

Detective Constable Paul Walls said: “The offender made off with around £200 cash and £100 in cigarettes.

“Luckily no one was hurt, but the staff were particularly shocked by what happened.

“We are studying CCTV images, but information from potential witnesses could prove invaluable.
