Rail services have been suspended between Salford Crescent and Manchester Oxford Road after a train derailed and caught fire on a bridge.
It happened on Windsor Bridge, close to Salford Crescent.
The train belonged to West Coast Railways - a heritage railway company. Only the driver was on board and their condition is unknown.
Network Rail said the incident will disrupt rail services as all trains on the line have been stopped.
The A6 Chapel Street is closed both ways between A6042 Trinity Way and A5066 Oldfield Road because of the incident and the A6042 Irwell Street is also closed in both directions.
