Merseyside Police has launched a murder investigation after a man was fatally shot in Aigburth.

Police were called to Southwood Road at around 10.20pm on Monday night, October 24, after they received reports of gunshots and a man lying in the street.

Emergency services discovered a man in his 30s at the scene with gunshot wounds to his head, thigh and buttock. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Southwood Road and Bryanston Road have been cordoned off as detectives carry out CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries. Patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure residents in the community.

Our enquiries are clearly at a very early stage, although it does appear that this was a targeted incident.

I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around this time, to call us so we can find those responsible and put them before the courts.

We will not tolerate the use of firearms on the streets of Merseyside and are relentless in our efforts to bring those who are prepared to use them to justice.
