Wigan journalist campaigns to free translator still in prison

Two British journalists arrested in Turkey on terror charges are campaigning to get their translator, who remains in prison, freed.

Philip Pendlebury, from Wigan, and Jake Hanrahan were accused of "working on behalf of a terrorist organisation" and "assisting Islamic State" before they were eventually released on Thursday.

Mr Hanrahan described his arrest and time in a high-security prison as "traumatic" and added he was concerned for their Turkish-based colleague Mohammed Ismael Rasool.

Vice News said: "Vice News continues to work around the clock with all relevant government and legal representatives to secure his release.

"We call on the Turkish authorities to continue their positive course of action in freeing Jake and Philip, and releasing Rasool immediately."

Jailed cameraman returns to UK

A cameraman from Wigan released from a prison inTurkey where he'd been held on terrorism charges has returned to the UK.

Philip Pendlebury and two colleagues had been charged with "assisting Islamic State."

Philip's employer Vice News said he was in good health and spirits but one colleague remains in prison and he is very concerned for him.

VICE News 'grateful' journalists have been freed

VICE News say they have received confirmation from the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office that two of their journalists, Jake Hanrahan and Philip Pendlebury, from Wigan, have been released from a Turkish prison.

In a statement, they said:

"While we are grateful that they have been freed, we are deeply worried by reports that our other VICE News colleague, Mohammed Ismael Rasool, has had his appeal of release rejected by the Turkish government. Rasool is an experienced journalist and translator who has worked extensively across the Middle East with VICE News, Associated Press, and Al Jazeera.

We call on the Turkish authorities for a swift end to this unjust detainment and to grant his immediate release."

Wigan journalist set for release after being detained in Turkey

The two Vice news reporters who were arrested in Turkey will be released, according to a government source.

British journalists Philip Pendlebury, from Wigan, and Jake Hanrahan have been detained since late last Thursday in Turkey.

The pair were charged by a Turkish court with “aiding a terrorist organisation”.

The journalists' fixer, an Iraqi national, remained in custody pending investigation, the source said.

It is believed Phil Pendlebury will be released tomorrow, on his 30th birthday.
