Former DJ Ray Teret guilty of seven counts of rape

There were cheers and shouts of 'monster' from the public gallery at a court in Manchester, as the former DJ Ray Teret was jailed for 25 years for a series of historical sex offences.

The 73-year-old, a friend of Jimmy Savile, used his celebrity status to abuse young girls.

Teret was convicted of seven rapes and 11 indecent assaults but police believe those victims may be 'the tip of the iceberg".

Former DJ Ray Teret selected young girls who were both "physically and emotionally immature", the judge said.

Mr Justice Baker said Teret made his victims "feel special" and that they should "feel grateful" for having lost their virginity to him rather than anyone else.

Six of his victims were raped while five were "so awed" by Teret's celebrity status that they consented to having sex with him, the court was told.

The judge said: "All the girls were used for your own sexual gratification.

"My judgment is it is not near coincidence that each of those girls were between 13 and 15 when you abused them ... I am sure you have a sexual interest in girls of that age."

Former DJ and friend of Jimmy Savile Ray Teret "cast a dark shadow" over his victims' lives, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police is currently investigating four new complaints against Teret, which they received during the trial.

The media publicity that followed the death of Jimmy Savile was the "catalyst" of the case against former DJ Ray Teret, the judge said.

Mr Justice Baker said complainants had come forward against Teret following his friend Savile's death.

The judge told the 73-year-old: "Thereafter when a few of your victims disclosed to the police, others came forward and frankly told the police that without the support of those other victims they did not feel their account would be believed."

During the trial, Teret was cleared of aiding and abetting Savile to rape a 15-year-old girl in the early 1960s but was found guilty himself of raping the same complainant.

Patricia Adams was raped by Ray Teret when she was 14-years-old.

The brave victim attended court today to see her attacker finally brought to justice and spoke to ITV News outside court.

Passing sentence, Mr Justice Baker, said Teret's "ill-judged cynicism" that his victims would not come forward was matched by his belief that the jury would not believe their accounts.

The public gallery, which contained a number of complainants in the case, erupted into applause when sentence was passed.

One woman shouted "yes" and another said "monster" as he was led to the cells.

Teret shook his head in the dock after the judge completed his remarks.

Teret, 73, used his celebrity status in the Manchester club scene in the 1960s and 1970s to prey on his underage victims aged between 13 and 15.

Known as Ugly Ray, Teret was mentored by Savile early in his career and was described as following him around "like a shadow" during his trial.

He was convicted of seven rapes and 11 indecent assaults, which took place between 1963 and 1979. He was cleared of various sexual offences in relation to six other complainants.

Following his trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, Greater Manchester Police confirmed it is investigating fresh sex allegations against Teret made by four other women.
