Inspirational schoolboy Ted McCaffery, from Warrington has been named LIDL's Young Fundraiser of the Year at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards 2014.

While he waited for open heart surgery, little Ted decided to raise money to replace the broken TV in his room - not for himself, but for the next little boy or girl.

He finished a mini-triathlon to raise money for the hospital before launching a social media campaign where people take a photo of their teddy, adding #showusyourbear and donate to Alder Hey.

Pop singer Olly Murs presented little Ted with his award at last night's star studded ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. Olly told little Ted a private jet was waiting to whisk him and his family away for a holiday in Disneyland Paris, right there and then.

With a huge grin, Ted replied: "Back of the net!"

A young boy from Warrington has been named the Young Fundraiser of the Year after raising money for Alder Hey Children's hospital following risky heart surgery.

Ted McCaffery was waiting to undergo open heart surgery, when he noticed the TV in his room wasn't working. The six-year-old’s first thought was not for himself, but for the next seriously ill child who would occupy his bed in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Turning to mum Jo, Ted declared that as soon as he was out, he was going to raise money to buy a new TV to help distract other kids from their gruelling treatment. And true to his word, just eight weeks after he left hospital, Ted was crossing the finish line of a mini-triathlon having raised more than £1,000 in sponsorship for the Liverpool hospital. Ted told the Daily Mirror: “It was hard but I told everyone I was going to do it and I wanted to stick to my promise.”

Find out more about Ted's story here. The Pride of Britain awards will be shown on ITV at 8pm tonight.
