Police praise fans over victory parade

Greater Manchester Police want to thank the thousands of Manchester United fans who helped make tonight’s victory parade a resounding success.

An estimated 100,000 supporters lined the streets of Trafford and the city centre - with around 12,000 in Albert Square - to cheer on the club’s title-winning success and to say farewell to Sir Alex Ferguson.

We estimate that in total around 100,000 United fans came to cheer on their team along the parade route from Old Trafford to Albert Square despite the initial bad weather which didn’t dampen their spirits. “The vast majority of people attending behaved in the spirit of the occasion and generated a great party atmosphere. There were unfortunately some individuals who attempted to break through crowd control barriers which were set up for the safety of those attending and resulted in additional officers and stewards having to be deployed.”

– Chief Superintendent John O’Hare

Following the event three arrests were made for public order offences.
