Cheshire East Council update on flooding

The Trent and Mersey Canal at Croxton Lane, Middlewich. The risk of collapse is now receding and we do not believe housing is currently under threat.

Moss Lane/Flowers Lane/Bradfield Green. Sandbags have been deployed and we are currently pumping 25,000 litres of water an hour.

I would like to update the people of Cheshire East that, amid the unprecedented rainfall, this is the most up to date information we have:

We have currently got 12 roads closed. We have deployed some 500 sandbags across the Borough.

Fire fighters warn of dangers of rivers swollen by rain

Firefighters from Greater Manchester are warning the public of the dangers of rivers which have become swollen after the heavy rains. It comes after a man had to be pulled from the River Irwell. He'd fallen in whilst rafting. Emergency services were alerted by kayakers.

The three kayakers had every piece of equipment going, including ropes, wet suits, helmets and mobile phones, and without them and their equipment the man would almost certainly have died – the water was staggeringly fast. When crews arrived, the kayakers were in the water with the man and he was up against the bank, practically unconscious. The crews secured him using rope lines to stop him going down into the water while the water rescue boat made its way to the scene.

He was suffering from hypothermia and some cuts to his legs and was taken to hospital for treatment.

FLOODING: Latest advice from Cheshire Police

Cheshire Police are advising motorists to avoid the following areas which are affected by flooding:

  • Middlewich - areas around the Trent & Mersey canal
  • Northwich - town centre around the Bull Ring
  • Winsford - New Road
  • Warrington - Higham Avenue and surrounding areas
  • Bollington - Park Lane
  • Dutton (Near Frodsham) - areas surrounding the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Drivers are being advised to only make journeys that are 'absolutely necessary'.

In a statement, the force added:

"Due to continual heavy rain across the region overnight, parts of Cheshire have been subject to flooding and some of the counties roads have become impassable.

"There has been no requirement to evacuate any residents at this stage.

"Cheshire Police and other emergency services are working hard to ensure the safety of the local communities and road users, and urge motorists to only embark upon journeys that are absolutely necessary as driving conditions become increasingly difficult."

Flood-hit residents threaten to with-hold council tax

People living in flood-hit homes in Hambleton, near Poulton-le-Fylde, are threatening to with-hold their council tax.

They say it's the third time their homes have been threatened by rising flood waters.

Among the residents threatening to take action is David Shaw, who lives in the town.
