The Formby Day Nursery celebrates 50 years with the original owner still at the helm
ITV Granada Reports journalist Lucille Brobbey went along to celebrate the nursery's very special anniversary
A nursery is celebrating 50 years since opening with the owner still at the helm now aged 89-years-old.
Pamela Edwards opened the Formby Day Nursery, alongside her late husband in 1975, now running it with the help of other family members.
Pamela says she loves what she does and has looked after generations of the same families.
“When we moved here, there were no playgroups or nurseries at all and lots of children so we decided we would go for it," she said.
"We started with four children and now we have 46. We have a lot of parents that came here as children. It’s like one big family really, it’s been lovely."
Over the past five decades, Pamela has been known as Mrs Edwards but recently, she has earned a new special title courtesy of the children she cares for, one that she enjoys.
“Most of them call me Grandma," she added. "If I go shopping, you hear everyone say ‘look here’s grandma’, so it’s very nice."
Katie Brannan Pamela's granddaughter, who also works at the nursery says her dedication and passion is an inspiration: “It’s amazing working with her.
"It’s a privilege really, she’s got such a determination. 89 almost 90, out doing us every day.
"She means everything to me, I’m just so proud of her and if I am half the woman she is then I’ll be proud of myself as well. “
The 89-year-old is still as present as ever and has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
When asked about retirement she told us she had no plans.
“Well it’s my life really," she said. "I’ve never thought of doing anything else. It’s lovely and it’s worth it. And I shall keep going, I’m not retiring yet.”
