Brave Merseyside police dog helps to catch three suspects in just a few hours

A plucky police dog working with the Merseyside Force has helped to catch three suspects within just a few hours.

Taro's day got off to an early start when he and his handler were called to a report of a burglary at a car dealership on Sandhills Lane in Liverpool at 8.40 yesterday.

PD Taro attended with his handler and a helped to detain a man at the scene.

A 25-year-old man from Wirral was arrested on suspicion of burglary other than dwelling and possession of a controlled drug Class B (cannabis). He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Within a couple of hours Taro was off again, this time to a report of a domestic incident at a house in Kirkby.

Police were told damage had been caused to a property and Taro was set to track down and stop a man who was seen to make off across a field. Officers say that they are continuing enquiries into this incident.

In his third shout of the day at 2.40 officers investigating the reported theft of a Chevrolet Captiva from Woolfall Heath Avenue in Huyton called on Taro and his handler for help.

When the car was spotted by an officer and chased the occupiers abandoned the car and ran away.

PD Taro and handler chased a youth to a nearby address with other officers and the male was caught.

A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, and a series of other offences. He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Matrix Inspector Simon Wilson said: “These three incidents just go to show the variety of ways we deploy our police dogs and their handlers when responding to reports of crimes and how efficient they are in helping to track and detain suspects.

“PD Taro had an excellent shift, detaining three suspects for a variety of offences including burglary and theft, in around six hours, proving what a valuable asset he is to the force.”
